At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
