EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
