Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
