Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
