The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
