This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
